While wandering around norther italy, I found a new architect to deify. Although I had hardly heard of Carlos Scarpa before visiting The Quirini Stampalia in Venice, the style left and immediate impact on me. Firstly, the attention to detail was astounding. Every piece of hardware, every stair tread and handrail, is made for a purpose and with a particular place in mind. The result is a building that impresses you as much with craft as it does with general form. (the lock to the left appears to have been made for the sole purpose of locking the gates on the Quirini Stampalia. )
